Dr. Angela M. Crawley, Ph.D., is an Associate Scientist in the Chronic Disease Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa, and an Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Biology at Carleton University. Dr. Crawley’s lab opened in April 2012, and her research has focused on the study of how chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) impairs the immune system in both HCV mono- and HIV-HCV co-infection. Specifically, she has recently identified global cytotoxic CD8+ T-cell (CTL) impairment in these infections, which extends beyond virus specificity and indicates a concerning immune dysfunction. Ongoing research integrates analyses of the effects of anti-viral therapy.

Dr. Crawley’s research training background includes a B.Sc. in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University, followed by a Ph.D. in Pathobiology in the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. She then conducted a productive postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Jonathan B. Angel’s lab at the OHRI, funded in part by an Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN) Fellowship Award. Dr. Crawley is supported now in part by a CIHR New Investigator Award and an OHTN Junior Investigator Development Award. In addition to maintaining a busy research program, Dr. Crawley is active in university teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and medical school levels, in both French and English.
